The End of an Era

Steve Jobs shows off iPhone 4 at the 2010 Worl...

On a sad note, yesterday the world said goodbye to one of its great entrepreneurs and innovators, Steve Jobs. I’ve lived in the Silicon Valley for many years, literally in the shadow of Apple. I used my first Apple computer in junior high, and took one with me to college. Back then, harddrives were the size of shoe boxes and monitors came in two colors: black and white (okay, 3. I had a green screen too). Before Apple, computers took up rooms and buildings.

Now, many years later, I can keep my music library, my books, my maps, and my photos in my pocket, literally at the tip of my fingers–all thanks to Steve Jobs and the innovators at Apple. I can watch movies on my iPod or iPhone, including Pixar’s Toy Story, thanks to Steve Jobs. Not every one of his ventures took off, but he never gave up. His perseverance and ingenuity have shaped the world we live in.

Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. We’ll miss you.

Monday Funny

Some nerdy fun this morning: A literal interpretation of computer problems.

Isn’t it funny to see how much technology has influenced language? What computer terms tickle your fancy when taken out of context?

Thanks to my friend Kim for pointing me to this great video. Happy Monday!

3D – Yes or No?

Paper glasses for viewing Anaglyphs.

The debate over 3D movies has been raging for a while, and I’ll admit, I’m not really a fan. For me, the “wow factor” of 3D isn’t worth the extra money most of the time (for a family of 4, it’s like buying an extra movie ticket). Given the choice, we watch in old-fashioned 2D.

On the other hand, I’ll also admit I LOVED seeing the 3D IMAX movie from the space shuttle at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (do not miss it if you’re in the area), but I’m not in a hurry to go out and watch the Lion King in 3D. Or buy a 3D TV. My son has a pocket video game that has 3D you can turn on and off, and while it’s pretty cool, he plays mostly in 2D. Somehow, watching the news in 3D isn’t really a draw for me, either.

So, am I behind the times? Am I missing out on “the next big thing” or is 3D TV like Sony BETA? Better, cooler, neater, but not what the market wants?

What do you think? Is there any movie or show you’d love to see in 3D?
